Quality cooking time and spaghetti squash DIY video

How do you define quality time spent with loved ones? Is it that you run errands and go shopping together? Do you watch the same television show? Host parties and get-together’s? Since David and I have been dating, we have shared a bond over quality cooking time.

As bodybuilders, yes, we eat a lot. Yes, we spend more time in the kitchen than the average couple. However, we also make time for quality cooking time.

What I mean by that is, we commit to usually once per week where we will cook one nice meal together. None of the recipe will have already been “meal prepped” for the week. It will start from scratch, beginning to end.

What works for us is assigning specific parts of the meal each of us will prepare. Since I cook 99% of David’s meals while he is gone for work, he usually takes charge of the protein. He has also become quite fond of our new cast-iron skillet, which somehow, I STILL have not had the pleasure to try!

But, nonetheless, David works the oven and I will gather up vegetables, side dishes and, my specialty–desserts.

The meal we prepared a few weeks ago was homemade Greek flatbread pizzas.

We used Naan flatbreads, fat free Balsamic dressing, fat free feta cheese, shrimp, chicken (which was precooked), spinach, onions, garlic, peppers and dry spices. In about 45 minutes, the meal was made.

Dessert consisted of our favorite, Enlightened Ice Cream. If y’all have not tried it, it is a competitor to Halo Top. And in my opinion, way better. More creamy and satisfying flavors.

This week, while David’s been gone for work and I’ve been working my jobs and checking off priorities for launching my company, it dawned on me. We are the lucky ones.

Why is that? Because after dating for 10 months, both 25 years young, we understand and prioritize “quality time” with loved ones. I’d say that is pretty uncommon, wouldn’t you?

David and I are putting together a series of weekend videos. The latest shows some of our shenanigans with me cooking spaghetti squash, his breakfast routine and some farmer’s market fun.

How will you make the most of quality time? Do share in the comments, subscribe and follow our adventures!

Become the strong woman you admire

There are many people who never share their true feelings towards others they admire. There are many people who do not know how much they impact others. Most times, these are one type of person. They are strong women.
I’ve evolved as a strong woman myself. It’s taken time to come out. But, deep down, I’ve always been strong. At a young age, I would come up with these big goals for awards, accomplishments and contribution. Then, I would execute. I would not really promote it much. I kept to myself. I focus so hard on my goals, build myself from the inside out, and share my growth with close friends and family. I have always given my whole heart to anything and anyone I support and believe in. I also had a few weaknesses.
I wanted to please others. I wanted to be liked by others. I wanted to make people feel like I cared.
For me, this was making me feel good. But only for so long. I did this through four years of college and even into the first year in a full-time career. It started to make me steer away from my true self. It was shifting me away from my natural abilities as a strong woman. I desire to impact others without sacrificing my personal beliefs and values.

Happy birthday, 1/4 century young and full of life ahead!

You heard right. I recently celebrated my 25th birthday! What’d I do? Simple things: work, play, goals and family.¬†As I think about the past 24 years of my life, it’s not about getting old. I’m not turning 25 years old. It’s 25 years of life, of age, of vibrancy. I’m 25 years YOUNG! Ask anyone over the age of 21, being referred to as “young” is a compliment! It’s not just a compliment but something I plan to embrace.

Interpretation in language adds positive or negative emphasis to everything. For most of my life, there has been a mix of both. However, my most beneficial life experiences have come from positive influencers, role models, supporters and friends. When we focus to positive energy, even the tough times can be overcome with less stress, grief and fortitude. That’s why I choose to not use the word “old”. It’s perceived in a negative way. You can flip it to wisdom with age but let’s face it, people still perceive your body wearing down and not being “in tune” with the up and up as aging. That’s why I think eating a healthy balanced diet and exercising are key to preventative, long term health. And celebrating with birthday carrot cake with my boyfriend and later burger and fries with family are good balance.
